View Full Version : My first cover
SanStarko 05-10-2007, 01:56 AM Yeah, so my first proper attempt at making a cover, started it last night.
Firstly, sorry but yes it's yet another Spider-Man 3 one. Figured that it had plenty of decent pics available for it, and because so many other people have been doing them I was able to look at other peoples and take things from them. Be it things I did like or things that I didn't like.
Anyway, there are some things I still need to do obviously. The number 3 on the spine looks awful, haven't been able to get it to look right so just gave up for now. The back cover probably needs some more work probably, today was the first of me vaguely figuring out what to do with the clone tool in Photoshop so I need more practice with it.
Also, a problem i'm having. I'm trying to put the synopsis in...but everytime I do it, it just looks...fake. Probably not the best way of explaining, but I can't get it to look natural, like it's meant to be there. It just seems to pop out and looks really bad. So i've had to take it out for now, any ideas how to get it to work right? I've been doing it in white and putting it at 10pt, don't know if maybe that's too big.
God, i've wrote a lot....getting all my excuses in early :D
SilentWarrior 05-10-2007, 02:34 AM Overall very good for a first effort:thumbup:. I like it because its very clean and crisp.
First thing I noticed was that the logo on the spine is the wrong way. It should read from top to bottom (look at other spine to see what I mean). I usually make the logos myself so if you continue to have problems with the logo I can quickly whip one up for you in illustrator.
Not too sure what you mean about the synopsis and it looking un-natural?? If you put it on then we can see what you mean.
Also the cover dimension should be 3240 X 2175 and remember to change the specs at the back to reflect the Spidermen 3 specs as the template ones are incorrect.
But overall quite good. Keep updating us with your progress and we'll help you along the way:thumbup:
SanStarko 05-10-2007, 02:39 AM Ahhh, that's the problem with the logo on the spine. I kept looking at it and thinking something wasn't right but couldn't figure out what it was :biglaugh:
I'm going to have another go at getting the '3' right, after all practice makes perfect so they say.
I'll try sticking the synopsis bit back in and post it up later so you can see what I mean about it looking un-natural.
SanStarko 05-10-2007, 05:29 AM New updated version now. Fixed the logo on the spine so that it's actually going the right way this time. Gave up trying to get the logo right myself and just used the font instead...so much easier.
Had a play about with different fonts and colours for the synopsis. Lot happier with how the text looks now, but I still think i'm a bit off in my choice of size for the font.
Added an image of Eddie Brock turning into Venom underneath the main layer of the back cover. Felt I should at least give some hint towards the baddies in the movie, but didn't want to go overboard as I liked the back cover the way it was.
Did the credits for the back, again not sure of the font size....I think i've just got dodgy eyes to be honest though. I do it one size and think it's too small, so I make it bigger then think it's too big.
Still got to do the specs and fix the dimensions of it, no doubt there's other problems that have probably arisen as I was playing about.
Got to say this site is fantastic. Just simple things like having templates to work off, the font collections, and the help that's available all over the place. Makes it really easy to learn quickly.
SilentWarrior 05-10-2007, 05:40 AM That looks much better. I like how you have integrated the image of Eddie Brock at the back, it fits in nicely.
The synopsis looks okay. When looking at it I thought that it might be a good idea to make it italic. The reason why I say this is because the rain in the background which gives it the angled look. I would also suggest playing with the opacity of the text (around 80%) to help it blend in??
I would also suggest increasing the size of the credits, theres quite a bit of room in that area and you could even bold it if you wanted to...
Nice progress... :)
SanStarko 05-10-2007, 05:43 AM Cheers SilentWarrior, thanks for the help. I think i'll have to wait till tomorrow to try out your advice though....I hear my bed a calling me :)
gravital 05-10-2007, 05:49 AM Aside from SW's comments and corrections here are a few more for ya.
I as well honed in on the spine slip-up immediatley. I really like the front cover. I have nothing to recommend for changing it. You may want to make a secondary version with the regular spidey suit merging with the black version. How to do... 2 ways either fade into it, or (super tough) use the alien string effect from the movie. You could have it's tendril like form halfway engulfing/converting the suit. If you could get it to work I think that you would have another top-notch piece.
Some ideas to make the synopsis and any other text that you are to include look like it belongs.
1. Use your enviornment. The rain could make this happen for you. A well placed semi-transparent text box with rain splattering off of it would give it the feeling that you are looking for.
If you are not into actual boxes...
2. This ones a little bit more advanced, but would look much better. Webs...:omg: This would utilize elements from the movie to make it look like it belongs. You could have on the back, webs strewn about. certain sections would have a more pieced together web that would in a way hold the synopsis, special features, specs, credits, or what ever you decide to put in.
Lastly, the UPC label. That is some high value real estate you are working with back there. You may need to remove it.
One last note... This cover looks really good, keep up the qaulity of work you have thus far displayed.
johnnyboy619 05-10-2007, 08:51 AM nice work:thumbup:
kylumi 05-10-2007, 04:09 PM Actually the spine was OK in the first place...............I myself have some covers with spine titles running that way................ In France all covers are produced that way.
It much depends on personal preference..........In the UK, Australasia and USA it is considered as the standard left to right............in China they read vertically from the bottom and if you happen to be into Alu Case's you can read em any way you want...........
Your cover......................great start buddy.............keep up the good work:thumbup:
nonini 05-10-2007, 05:26 PM Great start on your first cover SanStarko.
One suggestion: i think the synopsis is to close to the edge of the spine,
Maybe you can play with it.
Cheers nonini. :)
SanStarko 05-10-2007, 11:10 PM Cheers for the encouragement guys.
Nonini, yeah I was thinking that the sunopsis was too close to the edge. That's after I changed it a little as it was near enough right on the the spine previously.
Thanks for the ideas Gravital, going to try some of them out over the weekend.
gravital 05-11-2007, 06:18 AM Really hope you nail it. I think that any of those ideas would be terrific.
