Not sure what ive done but for some reason every time i select a layer i have to then click on main picture for it to appear/reappear.

Also if im adding an effect to a layer i have to then click on pic to see the changes, before i could select a layer and it shows straight away, not sure what ive done :(

ULAM... I was waitin 4 someone else to chime in. It looks like I am all you get 4 now. Not sure what is going on with layer vis. You may have accidentally clicked on a view setting that is causing this to happen. Please provide smore info and will see if we can get it fixed.
As for the layer effect changes not showing up until clicking on pic... Do you have the preview optio selected? Is this happening as you are trying to add an effect, or is the effect already applied and it is not showing up until you select the appropriate layer?
Another ? what apps are you using?

When i was clicking on the 'eye' in layers, where the layer would appear or disappear nothing was happening until i then clicked on the pic.
The effect wasnt showing up until after i had added the effect and then had to click on main pic to see what the effect looked like.

Im using PS-CS3extended

Maybe its something i have checked/unchecked, but i went through the settings and they seemed fine :(

Is it just this projectthat you are working on? If it extends past this one and is evident in others that U R working with then I would have to say that it is either a settin in the app or in your hardware. I was havind a similar issue in illlustrator, where when edititg points the entire image would disappear. It was still there but it would not show up. Not sure whatthat was about but it could have just been the computer trying to tell me that it was displaying too much info.
So, this leads to another ? Are you running any programs in the background (itunes, medis players, etc.?

I was downloading something at the time but have since stopped everything else but still no joy, it seems to be on all projects not just the one.

I closed down PS then restarted it and i thought that solved it as the layers were working, i kept switching layers to test but after the fifth time its now gone back to how it was before.

It sounds like the computer is having some issues. If you did open it up and it worked fine until the 5th time or so then it would have to be something outside of the app. If you are familiar with your computer you may want to haev a look see. Take a look at how much data is on your HDD. You may be running out of space, possible adjust some settings on your graphics card, open the task manager and see how much memory is being used in conjunction with PS.

You may also want to increase the memory and cache size in preferances for PS.

Got about 7GB left on HDD, my pc has 1GB Ram and Intel P4 3ghz.

Photoshop using 443,568K in task manager

In preferences>performance it says :-

Available RAM: 718MB
Ideal Range: 395-517MB
Let Photoshop use: 395MB 55%
Cache Levels: 6

Does that seem right?

I have left pc on now for about 5 days so maybe a restart may be in order.

restart would be a good idea. You may want to clear up some space on your HDD and defrag. If PS is using 443,000K and is is only allowed to use 395mb that may be your prob. Just max out allowable to 517

Its still happeneing, took a while though this time but then it happened again.

I tested out and it seems its everything that alters the picture cant be done like alterations/effects/text/resize etc without clicking on pic afterwards to see the change. :(

I am sorry to hear that . I would suggest going to http://www.adobe.com/support/ . After all they would be the experts in this matter. After doing a quick search it sounds like it may also be a screen redraw issue. One of the solutions is to download an update/ patch. I would suggest pokin your nose around the support area to accurately diagnose the issue. Sorry I could not fix this for ya.
