View Full Version : The Strangers (Made some more alterations)
boneapart 09-03-2008, 04:51 PM Just trying out a New Look Front for this film... This is only a rough layout, door perspective will be altered. Just wondering if you guys think it will work...What do you think? Comments appreciated...

batboysmatboy 09-04-2008, 12:09 AM I like the idea. Great concept.
The plate on the bottom throws me off a little. Maybe more door on top, less door on bottom, plate on top. Or is there a font that looks like the address numbers, if so maybe you could use the TT like a street address.
Great start

Thanks for your comments Batboy, unfortuantly I had already made a few changes. See update below... I shall however take on board your comments...
boneapart 09-04-2008, 12:58 AM Okay! Here's an update with some changes...

See new update below...
batboysmatboy 09-04-2008, 02:47 AM I like the bricks.
Maybe add hinges to the door.
The cutout of the door seems 3D, but they look 2D (a little flat). Maybe tone down the black shadow on the broken wood, or a blend around the edges. I assume the door is layered on the pic, maybe randomly jagger the pic and layer it on the full door.
I don't know. All I know is I like it so far (I'm just anal). Good concept.
PS: I like the green door better
Bisky 09-04-2008, 03:49 AM I really like the way you think outside the box on your covers mate, I think I could learn alot from that, it brings originality to the cover.
I`m not sure which door I like the best as they both work, I defo agree with batboy on the 3d door though, seems too thick and doesnt work with the people, I`d also do somethin with the bottom lock, it looks huge and i think itd look better dark. I also think the bricks would look so much better dark, maybe even dark green, mossy(is that a word, it is now) looking.
All just my opinions mate.
lookin forward to this one.
cheers
boneapart 09-05-2008, 10:01 AM Thanks for your comments Bisky, much appreciated... I'll see what I can come up with...
metamate 09-05-2008, 11:27 AM My suggestion for what it's worth is to take the original picture in the door frame, reduce its size by about a third, find a picture of a corridor or hallway( doesn't have to be a long one) overlay that on the picture of Tyler and Speedman and then overlay the busted door on that. This might give a three dimensional quality to it.
Bisky 09-05-2008, 01:55 PM I used these bricks for my sweeney todd cover, dunno if they`ll be any better but worth a try if you want to.
cheers
boneapart 09-06-2008, 05:43 PM Okay! Made a few changes... Hope this is better... Comments appreciated...

I have to agree with Bisky, you really do think outside the box and that makes you covers very unique.
I Like the new look, the outer doorway adds some depth. I think if you shrink the door and the cutout (together) a little and add some black between the outside doorway and the inner door, it will add more depth and you'll get a better 3D effect. I would play with the door color also. Try green again, brown, beige, or an off white. Maybe a darker red (like a maroon).
Like it, like it, like it.
By the way, did I tell you I like it?

I reckon you really like this batboy! (hehehe) I like your suggestions and will certainly try them out... Thanks again for your comments...

batboysmatboy 09-07-2008, 08:52 PM Thank you, and yes I like it.
That 3D effect is really coming along. The spot where it is the most realistic, is at the top. The shadowing is "spot on" (as Bisky would say). Not to be picky, but if you could apply some of that effect to the rest of that doorway, I might just be tempted enough to go through it.
I like it
boneapart 09-08-2008, 12:27 AM :biglaugh: You don't half give me some challenges batboy... (hehehe) Hope the door is now good enough for you to walk through...;)

Bisky 09-08-2008, 12:37 AM Looks alot better mate, cant wait to see the rest
batboysmatboy 09-08-2008, 12:38 AM The 3D effect is really, really working now. Don't hate me, but if you stare at it for a few seconds, it looks like the top lock and the door handle are floating towards the outer door (you did such a great job with the 3D effect). Now this is the part where you fly to the USA, hunt me down, and beat me with the CS3 software. Could you put the lock and handle under the shadow?

Just booked a flight, on my way, better keep looking over your shoulder batboy... (hehehe) Only joking my friend, I'll see what I can do. (Just for you!):D
boneapart 09-08-2008, 01:07 AM Okay Cheekychops! I hope this is what you wanted... ROTFLMAO...

batboysmatboy 09-08-2008, 01:56 AM That's what I'm talking about. Perfecto.
Really, if you look at it for at least 20 seconds, you can really feel like you are looking down a hallway.
I'll see what I can do. (Just for you!):D
I really appreciate you doing just that for me. Thank you my friend.
Have you thought about the back yet? Windows? Back Door? ("what was that noise? Is there someone behind me?") Handbills? Posters?
I can't wait to see what you come up with.
Once again, thanks boneapart
Cheekychops (batboy)
boneapart 09-08-2008, 09:49 AM Thanks for your comments batboy, I was thinking about cutting out the couple on the front and adding a wooden floor, then pasting them onto the floor, so as to make it really look like a hallway...I hadn't thought about the back yet, but once again you've given me some idea's to work on...
batboysmatboy 09-08-2008, 01:18 PM Sounds like a goo idea
ulookingatme 09-08-2008, 11:56 PM Coming along nicely batboy............ erm i mean boney
boneapart 09-08-2008, 11:56 PM I changed the background of the pic and added a floor. I also added door hinges on the left... Not quite sure what to do about the back yet. I will be trying batboys suggestion, but would also welcome any other suggestions.

Bisky 09-09-2008, 12:02 AM i like the idea of the floor mate but it doesnt work at the mo, looks like a giant slide behind them.
The other thing is that the hinges go on the inside of the door.
cheers
batboysmatboy 09-09-2008, 06:23 AM Thanks ulookingatme, I put a lot of work...wait a minute, this is boneapart's cover.
boneapart (please do not take offense over that little joke)
boneapart, got the idea of the wood floor. Maybe use a slightly darker wood, and maybe if you could put a little shadow behind their heads, it would look more like a floor. It is really coming along. Thank you for incorporating all my suggestions into your work. I really appreciate my friend.

The floor was just a thought Bisky, as for the hinges, they can easily be removed... Thanks for your comments...

Thanks again for your comments batboy, I'll try a darker floor, but I may just ditch the floor idea altogether... I'll see how it goes...
boneapart 09-09-2008, 05:06 PM Okay! I decided to change the floor altogether with a new floor. I have also added a window on the back and taped a notice to the window for which I will be adding the back text. What do you guys think? Comments appreciated...

sleepyhead 09-09-2008, 05:40 PM Nice idea with the wooden floor but it's just not working boney, I think you should go back to the original.
The busted door needs some texture on the break, er... needs to be more woodified (made that word up) where the dark edge is.
Hopefully you know what I mean :)

Thanks sleepy. I get what you mean about the texture on the break...
metamate 09-09-2008, 06:13 PM One thing that's been bothering me about this cover since I laid eyes on it and hadn't been able to identify until now is the name plate above the door. Why not damage it slightly and make it hang by one screw so that the other side rests on the door frame?

Thanks for the idea metamate, but it would only hang on the lamp and personally I don't think it would look right... Thanks anyway.
boneapart 09-10-2008, 12:03 AM Okay! I altered the door cutout... Hope this is looking better... Still wondering what else to do with the back...

Done A Bit More... See Below!
Bisky 09-10-2008, 12:34 AM IMHO I liked it alot better when it had the original background on it, also I think the front pic looks too small on the latest update, was better biggers. I really like the idea of the window on the back, thats really good.
Also, this is just an idea, in the film they use an axe quite a bit, maybe fit one in stickin out of somethin, maybe the door? Just a thought
cheers
batboysmatboy 09-10-2008, 04:45 AM I like it. I think the floor is not working because the 3D is simulated (not real like in a photo). The depth has to be put in, it's not there naturally. Maybe if 2/3rds of the way up you replaced the floor with a wall and/or furniture, you would give it that depth.
I really like the window on the back.
I hesitate to make this suggestion because I've made so many so far (and you have been very gracious about it), so if you don't like it, toss it. A broken window. If you break the window, there are three ways it could go: 1) Keep it the way it is and crack the glass; 2) Put a hole in it; 3) Big cracks, broken glass, a few pieces missing on the outside, lots of tape in the asterisk pattern on the inside.
The above is an anal retentive tweak, so consider its source.
I like the window the way it is and if you do, that is what's important.
boneapart 09-10-2008, 08:46 PM Done a bit more... Still got to decide what to do with the floor on the front...

JollyRoger 09-10-2008, 09:43 PM Great idea here, boney, but I have to say, atm the perspective in the hallway is way off. I'm not even sure, that you'd get a glimpse of the floor, looking in from this angle. perhaps you should concentrate on the walls and shadows in there...
metamate 09-10-2008, 10:36 PM How about something like this? It's rough but you see what I'm getting at. Trying to render a good floor is murder. By the time Boney has rendered the floor correctly Scott Speedman and Liv Tyler would have to be so far away that you wouldn't be able to make out details.
It's just an idea and with all stupid ones easily shot down

Another Update below...
metamate 09-11-2008, 12:37 AM Hang on in there, bud. Good things and all that.
Looks great, Bones. Speedman's feet need sharpening. Liv's feet look like they're good. You just need to decide the light source. From the hallway picture you put in, I'd say it was daylight in the back, so you might want to pitch the shadow forward. I'd also suggest you sample the light reflection to the right of Liv's leg and use it in the light above them. Lens flare it and you're good.
As for the back I'd suggest broken flower pots or something. It says in your description the couple are in a vacation house and the backs of those always seem to have flower pots around them in movies even if there's no plants in them;)
Maybe some drippy blood on the window ledge. I'd black some of the bricks and use that for special features and the like.
Hope this doesn't mean an increase in the workload but I'm so looking forward to this cover I want to help as much as I can. Hope this helps.

batboysmatboy 09-11-2008, 04:27 AM I am so serious, I have to stop going to work, I miss so much.
Love the new updates.
My last two cents:
Just darken the cracks in the glass (a little hard to see). Love the broken window.
I also was thinking of maybe a little blood-splatter on the inside of the window.
The front is great. The added depth works. Two small thing: 1) The lighter colors in the background throw off the color of the door just a little. Maybe make the door one shade darker (now it's a little bright and cheerie); 2) The characters look a little small, maybe increase their size a tad, and increase the hole in the door proportionately.
I really do appreciate all the work you put into this cover (especially since most of my suggestions that you incorporated caused you a weeks worth of work each). Thank you again. It really looks good.
boneapart 09-11-2008, 12:07 PM Thanks again for your comments batboy!;)
boneapart 09-12-2008, 12:36 AM Okay! Here we go again... I've darkened the door...Made the crack in the window darker...Enlarged the front pic...added some blood drips to the window... And darkened the brickwork in places... Hope this is looking better...
