View Full Version : How do you cut an object out?
ulookingatme 04-09-2007, 10:05 PM Ok maybe im getting carried after doing my Elvis cover but my son now wants a Hulk Hogan dvd cover done :D
I have attached an image below of Hulk Hogan and would just like him cut out on his own to use, how can i do this please? :)
**Edited see later posts**
kylumi 04-09-2007, 10:15 PM this is a very simple one.................i just use scissors:thumbup:
kylumi 04-09-2007, 10:28 PM OK enough of the jokes:lol:
Me I always use the PEN TOOL but, i do not advise you to use that just yet.......the PEN TOOL enables you to create arc's, curves, and bends.......in fact all sorts of shapes..........
Stick with these for a while...........until you get into the swing of it:thumbup:
The Lasso : For the sure-handed mouse wielding master, the slightest mistake or hiccup could send the lasso on a wild rampage through miles of endless graphic that you dont want cut out. Of course this can be undone, but its more of a hassle than i would like. If this is your weapon of choice, I commend you. It follows where the mouse goes.
Polygonal Lasso : A nice tool, you click two consecutive points on your picture, the lasso connects them. The closer you put your two points, obviously the less square your picture becomes. This can be used effectively if the points are placed at small enough intervals around the entire contour of the object.
Magnetic Lasso : What it does is it senses borders and you just run the cursor along the edge of the object and photoshop senses the border and the selected area follows in suit. Key to using this object : at pivotal turns in the shape, you can place a point just like in the polygonal lasso that will force the selection to come to that particular place. Also important to note is that similar colors or intersecting lines at small angles can cause an annoyance when using this tool.
RockLoGic 04-09-2007, 10:46 PM What cover is it that you are after mate? or are you just determined to make your own?
kylumi 04-09-2007, 10:55 PM He is just very determined Rock..............;)
ulookingatme 04-09-2007, 11:58 PM Damn it , just tried with scissors like you said but it just cut up my monitor :p
I'm determined to make my own, but if that fails then i'll rob someones elses cover :D
Just had a quick go with the tools you said but its VERY tricky, it looks totally butchered BOOHOO!!
I was hoping for a super tool that you just press and it cuts it on its own :D
Oh well i'll have another go tomorrow.
kylumi 04-10-2007, 12:01 AM ulookingatme..................you need to zoom real close in and make the clicks nice and close together...............imagine that you are tracing a sketch:thumbup:
SilentWarrior 04-10-2007, 01:11 AM I use the pen tool myself, but as Kylumi said your best to use the others for now. There is a plugin by vertus which automatically senses borders, but that itself takes some time to master as well as well as hijacks your systems resources.
anacron 04-10-2007, 08:29 AM you could as well make a quickmask and just brush it away, by creating a mask it's also easy to brush back, that's why it's better than just erasing
it's rather annoying to hit ctrl+z all the time :)
and anyway I don't think it's that hard to use pentool (maybe because im a vector artist :D ) but anyway you should at least try it, because if you wanna do more designs you end up using it someway or another
SilentWarrior 04-11-2007, 12:45 AM The pen tool is good to try although it can be difficult to get the hang of. I also create vector art, in fact I enjoy it just as much as creating cover art. I personally prefer the pen tool in illustrator over PS.
ulookingatme 04-11-2007, 09:21 AM Thanks for the info, i will stick with it and keep practising, the plugin by vertus sounds interesting, may have a look at look that too. :)
ulookingatme 04-11-2007, 10:22 AM Is the pic ive chosen good enough quality, not sure if they have to better pics to get a better cut etc and should you zoom in as much as possible?
Also would it be possible for someone to give me a little demonstration if they can say just cut round Hulks head so i can see what im looking to compare with (just the head or part of body, doesnt have to be more otherwise i may be tempted to use that one) :D
Many Thanks
SilentWarrior 04-11-2007, 10:33 AM It depends on how you want to use the picture? Its pretty low res overall but may be useful for smaller use.
ulookingatme 04-11-2007, 02:46 PM Not quite sure how its going to be used just yet, i guess it was just a test piccy to see how easy/hard it is to cut out . :)
ulookingatme 04-26-2007, 07:34 PM Ok i have tried lots of ways and so far using the wand and erase combined with magnetic lasso seems to be giving me the best results.
Have attached before and after pic.
I did this in about 5-10mins.
I think it still needs tidying up a bit as the original picture has a 'fuzz/feathered affect' around body.
What do you think?
How can it be improved?
Should i be getting better results if so how?
kylumi 04-26-2007, 08:16 PM This is one reason i use the PEN TOOL ulam m8, with this tool you can actually follow the contours that you wish to remove.........and set the FEATHER option to ZERO:thumbup:
Give it a go;)
ulookingatme 04-26-2007, 08:39 PM LOL is my effort that bad then :p
Can you do me a massive favour Ky(or anyone that knows how to handle the pen lol), when you have time can you just cut around Hulk's head for me, just so i have something to compare my efforts with.
kylumi 04-26-2007, 10:54 PM just upload it here and i will do it for you:thumbup:
ulookingatme 04-26-2007, 11:11 PM Ok will do mate, but i dont want you to do it all for me, just a little bit so i can see what im aiming for
kylumi 04-26-2007, 11:34 PM If that is the image in your first post i have already grabbed that.............but, it is only 800 x 500 pixels or so.................so it is very low rez:jedi:
But, i will do it anyways.................tomorrow
SilentWarrior 04-26-2007, 11:46 PM ULAM I quickly googled for a pen-tool tutorial. I found this one hxxp://img671.libsyn.com/img671/26b1542266c6d5700c015ffd4a25f350/46312a4c/2277/5479/SCRAPADELIC_VIDEOCAST_7__The_Pen_Tool.mp4
I scanned through it and it shows the essentials of the pen-tool and should help you get started.
ulookingatme 04-26-2007, 11:58 PM Cheers SW, i'll have alook through that later and have another try
ulookingatme 04-27-2007, 02:10 PM If that is the image in your first post i have already grabbed that.............but, it is only 800 x 500 pixels or so.................so it is very low rez:jedi:
But, i will do it anyways.................tomorrow
No i changed the picture to this latest one as it was so low res. :)
Cheers for that link SW that came in real handy that women was amazing so quick and perfect cut out.
Ok heres my first effert with pen tool, i must admit though it does do the job a lot better then my last effort.
What do you think of this............bearing in mind its my first go and was a bit rushed as i was going out :D
boneapart 04-27-2007, 02:26 PM Hi ULAM, I have always used the Magig Wand Tool myself and get good results, but I must say that this last effort of yours with the Pen Tool is very very good. If I was you I'd stick to using that...
kylumi 04-27-2007, 03:42 PM That is heaps better m8...................but, you must learn to zoom in as close as you possibly can .............in order to keep the Anchor Points CLOSE KNIT.
This method will give you excellent results because you have improved your PEN TOOL control by doing so!
ulookingatme 04-27-2007, 04:20 PM Cheers Boneapart, i did like the magic wand and found it a bit easier but now i know someone like you with your artistic abilities uses it maybe i will switch back to that......oh what a dilema!!! :D
Cheer Ky :), i do like the pen but it can be quite tricky to use, one thing though in the tut' the women says to try and keep anchor points far apart as possible(unless i got that wrong) but your saying keep them close together?
What i like with the pen is that it cuts out completely the back ground and doesn't leave rogue pixels like i found with the wand.
kylumi 04-27-2007, 06:58 PM The lady in the movie does not make DVD covers...............:omg:
