What are you doing to clean up your corners? I notice on your scans have squared corners (no visible rounding from covers) yet you don't seem to lose any edge real estate in the crop. If I try to crop where I don't get any of the round part in the crop, I lose too much edging.
I don't know if I explained myself well enough so let me know.

Scans that I have personally made have always had squared edges however I have seen many covers as you say with round corners. However I don't crop the image further because the result would be a lower resolution.
Instead I use the clone tool to transform it into a straight edge. I actually fixed up the corners and optimised the spine on the Star Wars covers you uploaded.
If you use the clone tool the right way, you shouldn't be able to tell that the edges were rounded. I've used the clone tool in my Lord Of War custom cover (which I haven't uploaded yet but is previewed on the home page) to generate Nicholas Cage's Right shoulder.
So give the clone tool a go, I use it all the time when fixing my scans. I hope this helps.

Just tried it. Man it made easy work of the corners! Thanks.
The only problems will be where there is not a solid color(s) in the corner but perhaps part of an over all image. Its weird that you don;t come across rounded corners much. I don't think I own a DVD where the cover doesn't have rounded corners.

It does get more complex when there is a image which extends into the corner. You can always decrease the opacity of the clone tool as so it's not as strong.
When I'm dealing with corners which aren't solid colors I zoom in ~400% and work on it from there. As long as the color and texture appear right then your good to go.
