View Full Version : Printing Covers
Axion 01-16-2008, 01:20 AM Just wanted to know what DVD covers everyone uses to print the full covers on, and what programs everyone is using?
I have tried a few diffrent brands of covers and a couple different printing programs and each is different and most don't get the FULL cover on the paper, there is always some extra that gets cuts off when I print mine..
Whats everyone else using?
SilentWarrior 01-16-2008, 01:46 AM In terms of paper, there was a discussion in this thread:

I don't use any specific software to print out my covers. I just print directly or in Photoshop by choosing the print option. I just make sure to select the paper type and quality of the print out. I set it to print to landscape, and set the paper size (In my case 'A4' but you have have 'letter'). I also set it to print at 'actual size' not 'scaled to paper size'
This will work given that a standard cover is 3240 x 2175 px at 300 DPi.
Axion 01-16-2008, 02:16 AM Cool thanks :)
JollyRoger 01-16-2008, 02:59 AM UndercoverXP is a software that will bring you satisfaction. Google it. Garantied it will wet your pants
Axion 01-16-2008, 05:34 AM Seems as thought 180gsm Satin / Matte A4 paper is what to get, only problem for me now is that I can't seem to find it for sale anywhere in the USA, lol.. only place that I can find is the UK!
tightline_69 01-16-2008, 05:51 AM I used 8 1/2 X 11(216x279mm) 90 to 96 brightness ,white paper. If you want it glossy then u will have to use photo paper. But that gets a little expensive.
Axion 01-17-2008, 02:50 AM Isn't 8 1/2 x 11 white paper a little too short to print a proper cover at 3240x2175 pixels?
I tried one as a test and it looks like it cut about 1/2 an inch off one end of the cover..

Nope not at all too short. There is enough room for a 3240x2175 cover. You may have to trick your printer into thinking it is printing on 8.5x14 and drop the margins to 0.
tightline_69 01-17-2008, 06:19 AM No the printed covers actualy come out larger than retail covers . It fits the case very nicely and there is little trimming to do. I have had no problems. Now if I take a retail cover and copy it on my printer, yes it cuts the cover down. All the covers I have dl from here and printed have turned out great. Just my experiance any way
Axion 01-18-2008, 02:36 AM I got it, thanks guys :)
UndercoverXP works perfect just gotta change my printer setting to "minimize margins" and it fits like a glove! This is gonna save me so much money now, wow :)
So the premium HP bright paper should be best then huh? No need for glossy since the dvd case has the shiny plastic cover on it anyway..
SilentWarrior 01-18-2008, 02:57 AM Letter (8.5 x 11) works just as well as A4 as stated above. With the paper, your best off to experiment and see what works for you. I do not recommend glossy however because it will stick to the plastic. Semi-gloss on the other hand does a great job for me.

Any specific brands to go after?
Links to websites to buy?
I would rather get the good stuff to start then experiment, lol.
If you guys are using it, then it must be good stuff!
SilentWarrior 01-18-2008, 05:40 AM I use HP paper and am happy with the results. Just had a quick look on Amazon (US) and searched for HP semi-gloss (http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_ss_gw/103-3643686-3348667?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=hp+paper+semi+gloss&x=0&y=0) paper and HP matte (http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_ss_gw/103-3643686-3348667?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=hp+paper+matte&x=0&y=0) paper. I like to use semi-gloss paper for print outs that have a lot of colour..... and matte paper on print outs that are heavy on the blacks. I also recommend paper with a GSM of about 150, as thats a nice thickness for covers.
Slipmeister 03-26-2008, 06:59 PM Hmmm...
I print from within Photoshop and I've never had any problems with covers not coming out right, or not fitting the case.
