View Full Version : Which Next Gen. Format Are You Sticking With?
Eastwood 11-18-2007, 04:28 AM Well, I was rooting for Blu-Ray because my favorite movie Silent Hill is on that format, here in the US. But I learned that HDDVDs don't have regional coding and that the NTSC and PAL is phased out with the 1080p/i stuff. Then I learned that Concorde who does releasing for like Paramount and Universal movies in Germany released Silent Hill on HDDVD. Silent Hill was the only movie I saw in German theaters that was Dubbed in German so when I learned that it is on HDDVD I was like I've picked my side now. What about you people?
SilentWarrior 11-18-2007, 05:07 AM What about an 'undecided option' for those like me who are still unsure?
shaunofthedead9 11-18-2007, 05:24 AM I own both and am loving each one. I chose HD-DVD because of the content on the discs. On some blu-rays you pay the premium price and you get a premium screw job with the future double dips Sony is oh so famous for. But again I love both formats for different reasons.
Eastwood 12-06-2007, 03:58 AM Disney's going HD-DVD. Apparently, they are going triple layer which is 52 GB.
shaunofthedead9 12-06-2007, 04:20 AM Where did you hear this about Disney?

Yey!
Blue-Ray is much better for me because the storage capacity that we could save in a single blu-ray dics.
SilentWarrior 12-07-2007, 08:19 AM Looks like its even.
ulookingatme 12-07-2007, 11:05 AM I dont think i'll ever be able to choose unless one format comes right to the front, i own so many dvd's that i really dont want to change yet anway :)
shaunofthedead9 12-08-2007, 03:50 AM I will believe the Disney thing when I have it in my hands.
I like to be the early adopter so that is why I have both. It was like that with LD, DVD, and now this.

sleepyhead 01-07-2008, 10:32 PM This was just posted yesterday by MHD over at CM and even if it's all bona fide I would still be prepared to buy a HD DVD Player cos I'm certainly not going to get rid of all my DVDs that's for certain.

Has blu-ray won?
Warner are stopping production of HD, and the other studios are likely to follow
Paramount is HD-DVD, but The thing to know is, they were paid a lot of money by Toshiba and Microsoft to go HD-DVD and they only signed a 18 month exclusive contract. That contract ends at the end of this year?which means they?ll be back on the Blu-Ray bandwagon if the other studios are producing blu-ray only
Here's Warners press release:
WARNER BROS. ENTERTAINMENT TO RELEASE ITS HIGH-DEFINITION DVD TITLES EXCLUSIVELY IN THE BLU-RAY DISC FORMAT BEGINNING LATER THIS YEAR
Decision Made in Response to Strong Consumer Preference for Format
In response to consumer demand, Warner Bros. Entertainment will release its high-definition DVD titles exclusively in the Blu-ray disc format beginning later this year, it was announced today by Barry Meyer, Chairman & CEO, Warner Bros. and Kevin Tsujihara, President, Warner Bros. Home Entertainment Group.
"Warner Bros.' move to exclusively release in the Blu-ray disc format is a strategic decision focused on the long term and the most direct way to give consumers what they want," said Meyer. "The window of opportunity for high-definition DVD could be missed if format confusion continues to linger. We believe that exclusively distributing in Blu-ray will further the potential for mass market success and ultimately benefit retailers, producers, and most importantly, consumers."
Warner Home Video will continue to release its titles in standard DVD format and Blu-ray. After a short window following their standard DVD and Blu-ray releases, all new titles will continue to be released in HD DVD until the end of May 2008.
"Warner Bros. has produced in both high-definition formats in an effort to provide consumer choice, foster mainstream adoption and drive down hardware prices," said Jeff Bewkes, President and Chief Executive Officer, Time Warner Inc., the parent company of Warner Bros. Entertainment. "Today's decision by Warner Bros. to distribute in a single format comes at the right time and is the best decision both for consumers and Time Warner."
"A two-format landscape has led to consumer confusion and indifference toward high definition, which has kept the technology from reaching mass adoption and becoming the important revenue stream that it can be for the industry," said Tsujihara. "Consumers have clearly chosen Blu-ray, and we believe that recognizing this preference is the right step in making this great home entertainment experience accessible to the widest possible audience. Warner Bros. has worked very closely with the Toshiba Corporation in promoting high definition media and we have enormous respect for their efforts. We look forward to working with them on other projects in the future."
SilentWarrior 01-07-2008, 10:44 PM Its looking like a lot may change this year and it looks like one format (Blu-ray in this case) is finally taking the lead.
tightline_69 01-26-2008, 07:26 AM I have seen a few HDDVD's and I think I like them better. I don't think they are going to get many buyers to hop on the Blu-Ray band wagon unless they can control the outragous price. So for now I will just stick to my plan DVD's. I have 2 many to try and replace all of them.
ulookingatme 02-19-2008, 08:10 PM Wonder no more, Blu-Ray wins the battle :D

gravital 02-19-2008, 09:27 PM Yeah I read about this today. My only thoughts.... bout freaking time!
Eastwood 02-23-2008, 08:44 AM Yeah, it's sad seeing HD-DVD go. But, for the time being, I'll stick with DVD.
mirwaisorbit 03-26-2008, 09:46 AM have hd-dvd, now that blu won, have to be blu.
Demonology 03-26-2008, 01:20 PM well i'm hd dvd fan and will carry on buying hd dvd until i can't buy anymore titles i want
then i'll just buy standard dvd..
I had a ps3 but sold it and made more money on it that i bought it for lol....
After seeing what i saw in asda's a few weeks ago it's very doubtful i'll buy into blu-ray
now after the announcement of blu-ray had won blu ray discs in asda went up in price...
spider-man 3 was £14.99 now it's £24.99 same with alot of other titles...
to me this is the best way to turn customers right off the format....
Blu-ray players cost between £200 - £1200 and nothing below the £800 price
has firmware upgrading abilities which means they be out dated when profile 2.0
comes about...
Personally think all this bumping up prices is pretty shocking concidering they won the war and guess it's sony just being plain greedy now with an incomplete format........
shaunofthedead9 03-26-2008, 03:09 PM That what sony is all about, screwing people over.
I own both players and I think that HD DVD has a better hi def image, but I like Blu-ray too!!!!
SilentWarrior 03-31-2008, 10:57 AM I own both players and I think that HD DVD has a better hi def image, but I like Blu-ray too!!!!
I can't compare as I only have Blu-ray. I think it actually depends on the movie though. There's a good thread over at blu-ray.com where members record blu-ray bitrates.
ambientflyer 06-25-2008, 05:49 PM Any new thoughts on this??? I still havent bought a blue ray player. Thought about a PS3 but you know.. I'm such a casual gamer that I dont think it would be worth it. I have a HI DEF TV so I need to get something soon.
I was thinking of tracking down a HD player to tide me over till the blu ray players come down in price. Not keen on paying 300USD for a player right now. Plus... I could get a ton of titles pretty cheep as HD is over. I have to think after the 2008 holiday prices will come down a lot in 2009. maybe I should just wait till then.
Give me some thoughts.
Thanks :)
Slipmeister 06-25-2008, 06:52 PM I waited for this issue to resolve itself, and as HD-DVD is pretty much a dead format not (apart for support from Microsoft) I went with Blu-ray (as it was there with the PS3 anyway).
The main issue with Blu-ray is that they are about ready to launch the next generation Blu-ray Disc (massively increased storage, up to 500GB if reports are to be believed), so I'd wait and see what compatibility issues are going to become apparent with the new disc (even though I cant really see there being any as they are not changing anything about the technology).
Slipmeister 06-25-2008, 06:57 PM Why do people give Sony grief over Blu-ray, they only helped develop the format along side many other companies, they simply saw sense and stuck it in the PS3
ulookingatme 06-25-2008, 07:10 PM I love my dvds and until i really have to buy a hi-def tv only then will i think about buying blu-ray :D
Slipmeister 06-25-2008, 07:25 PM I made a rule to only buy a movie on Blu-ray if it would actually benefit from being in Hi-Definition, otherwise I buy the DVD
